How is this archive created?

General news feeds such as Google News and Reuters are used in the process. If a news story is references multiple times in different sources then this is important news. A group is created in this case. For each group the time of first reference and last reference to the news is recorded along with the number of news stories in this group. Then the information is displayed on a timeline that you see above.
The process of building groups is thus the most interesting part. Right now it is a manual process. However, I am planning to automate group creation based on title's similarity.
